floatplane_40_2.jpg Summertime fun need not be landlocked. Flight Design showed its new float system at Sun ‘n Fun 2010 and by EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2010, the company’s new CTLS-Lite model is flying on the amphibious gear. The German company known for its speedy development cycle can now boast a floatplane thanks to their strong dealer network.  Developed by Airtime Aviation of Tulsa, OK.  “The Clamar floats match the structure and the feel of the Flight Design planes, said Tom Peghiny, president of importer Flight Design USA. Installed price on a customer’s airplane has been set at $38,000 for the amphibious float option for all component parts, the mechanical work, and all FAA documents. Airtime Aviation indicated the system is presently available only for the CTLS model but work has been started to add floats to the CTsw model from Flight Design.  The Clamar float system is constructed from carbon fiber, kevlar and S-glass to make the CTLS floats a premier product. The float manufacturer is able to use aramid fabrics like Kevlar because of their proprietary infusion process. The composite materials make the floats substantially lighter in overall weight than aluminum or composite floats of same displacement, said Clamar. The floats are 14 feet 5 inches log and 22.6 inches wide. They have four compartments which are all accessible with 6-inch spin-off covers. Gear movements are produced by an all-electric 12-volt system.  A visual notification system for gear position is standard and audio gear warning is available at extra cost. With a buoyancy reserve, each float can hold 1,430 pounds, which is the legal limit for a Light-Sport seaplane.  Flight Design is a 23-year-old air-sport products producer based in Germany. The company remains the worldwide market leader thanks to its well-received CT series of light aircraft. More than 1,500 of these aircraft are flying in 39 countries. One of the first aircraft certified under ASTM International standards in 2005, the CT (“composite technology”) remains the top-selling LSA in America through five consecutive years. Flight Design sold the first LSA to India and was the first LSA to earn Chinese Type Design Approval. A newer model, the MC (metal concept), has generated excitement in the market.

Eleven years after the first CT entered production in June 1997, the Flight Design Team is introducing their new CTLS. Pilots will easily recognize the similarity to preceding CT models, yet the changes are many as the new LS model addresses customer requests over the last two years. Flight Design, the clear market leader in Europe and the United States, has proven that the company knows how to satisfy cards_small.jpgcustomer expectations.

The  LS offers the utmost in space, comfort, performance and ease of flying so that less experienced pilots can fly it easily. The aerodynamic qualities of the CTLS were completely reworked using full-size wind tunnel tests and flight evaluations employing the newest data recording equipment.

In the LS interior, the seats have been redesigned and the noise level reduced to underline the long range capability of the CTLS. The cabin has been resculpted to add volume and light. The engine installation and fuel system have been reworked according newest market experience and know how. New construction materials have improved durability and outside weather resilience.

As corporate policy, Flight Design never presents a new airplane until it is fully certified and ready for delivery. The CTLS was debuted at the 2008 Sebring Expo in Florida, USA on January 17th and at similar dates in different countries around the world. The CTLS is certified as a Special Light-Sport Aircraft fully meeting ASTM standards and the German BFU/LTF-UL rule. Augmented not replaced, the CTSW model will be continuously built.
